2 Vessel Umbilical Cord
If your baby has a 2 vessel umbilical cord, you need to be very careful. You need to be more relaxed and take it easy than usual, take walks in fresh air, make breathing exercises and take plenty of liquids and fresh water. Your baby should not be stressed out.
Most of the cases with 2 vessel umbilical cord end with a health baby. The occurrence of 2 vessel umbilical cord is 1% in singleton pregnancies, and 5 % in twin and multiple pregnancies. Your doctor might suggest a chromosomal analysis. This test will rule out any genetic abnormalities or other congenital problems. You and the baby will be closely monitored, but it is very likely that everything is just fine.
What else can you do to ensure that the baby is fine with a single umbilical cord. You can do a lot to provide more oxygen to the baby by taking care of your nutrition and creating a regular exercise routine.
Provide enough liquids to your body and the baby by drinking lots of water, and getting good levels of salt and minerals.
Ask your doctor to tell you where is the placenta. Usually the placenta is on top of the uterus (fundal) or towards the mother's spine (posterior). If the placenta is anterior, make sure that the baby's weight is not placed on the placenta.
In later pregnancy, you can prepare yourself for a short, easy labor and earlier start of labor. This can be done through using hypnobirthing exercises, using herbs, such as cotton root bark and others for induction of labor.
Avoid the use of pitocin in induction. If you are birthing in a hospital and pitocin is a standard, be aware that it can be dangerous to babies with Single Umbilical Artery. The contractions are not spaced out normally and the baby can not recover in the short time for rest.
If your doctor requests the administration of pitocin, ask for a low-dose pitocine for ripening the cervix if necessary for a day. Then take a couple of days to rest and allow the cervix to ripen.
If pitocin is used for induction during the birthing process, ask for low dose enough for the labor to start, and then allow your body to increase the dilation naturally. It is good to discuss your needs and desires with your doctor in advance.
You can also request a low-dose oral Cytotec induction. This will make it easier for you and the baby.
If your prenatal tests prove that there are no abnormalities with the baby and you feel healthy, look for out-of-hospital birthing options, such as very experienced midwife. A midwife can help you have a much easier and calm birth, which is important for the baby as well.
During labor, the birthing room should be warm. The warmth increases blood flow and so oxygen reaches the baby easier. Warmth is also conducive to relaxing the body and tissues, which matters for an easy birth.
Do not allow rupture of membranes. The more amniotic fluid you have the better. The amniotic fluids cushion the umbilical cord and prevent compression of the cord.
The best position for giving birth is upright. Gravity will help you to give birth quickly and easily. Your upright position will keep the baby's with off the placenta.
Another way to keep the baby's weight off the placenta is to give birth in water. Warm water is a natural induction and alleviates pain, while relaxing the muscles.
You can be very relaxed and kneel against the side of the tub, or sit in a stool in the water, or even being upright without much effort.
Avoid epidural, because it can reduce your blood pressure and oxygen to the placenta.
Get ready for an easy and quick birth mentally and physically, it is completely with your reach.
