See a Woman Giving Birth

Today to see a woman giving birth is rare. Giving Birth is a special experience for any woman, it was once shared and honoured as sacred. However, the magic of birth in the industrialized knowledge economy seems to be diminished. Technology which can save lives has extended too far beyond the abnormal and has invaded the normal process of giving birth.

For thousands of years women have been able to see a woman giving birth naturally without being drugged, monitored, manipulated and made to stay comply with medical procedures, instead of with their body instincts. This was reassuring and made women strong and trusting their abilities.

Watching a woman giving at home can educate, change the common fear-based understanding of birth, and show mothers-to-be, midwives and doctors a new perspective. Many people have never seen a natural birth and consider it outside of the norm, while it is the norm for 80% of the world.

Giving birth naturally is beneficial for the mother and the child alike. The mother experiences the natural pain relief of her hormones and can enjoy birth and remember it as an empowering wonderful experience which it really is. The baby is alert, develops a great sense of belonging and security, bonds immediately with the mother and father. Since the mother and baby are not separated the natural mothering instincts appear and the mother can tap into her innate abilities to provide the best care for the baby. The baby on the other hand makes the transition into the world very smoothly. The baby is welcomed and can feel the soothing known heart beat of its mother, the warmth of her body and the consoling voice it is used to.

Watching a woman giving birth can give reassurance to mothers-to-be and medical practitioners that home birth is best and a preferred option for a healthy mother and baby.

Childbirth Resources

Spiritual Midwifery Book

The classic book on home birth is now available in a new edition, with updated information on the safety of natural childbirth, new birthing stories, and the most recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives. Included are stories of working with Amish women, shedding light on a different culture with a similar appreciation for natural childbirth. Ina May also provides new information about potentially dangerous techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, as well as the latest findings about VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). Improved instructions for handling breech births are also given. When the first edition of Spiritual Midwifery was published in 1976, it introduced an entire generation of young women to the possibility of home birth and breast feeding. It also breathed new life into the all-but-vanished field of midwifery.
