C-section Childbirth

C-section or cesarean section is marketed by word of mouth in prenatal clinics. Elective cesarean without labor or medical necessity is gaining popularity. Student obstetricians are thought that it is not unethical to avoid bringing up the risks of surgical delivery. Even the higher rate of maternal deaths after c-section is neglected, because it is still an overall small number. Future mothers are not properly informed about their options and the consequences of c-section (cesarean section). Doctors do not mention the benefits and necessity of vaginal birth and labor for the physiological and psychological development of the new born and the mother.

Labor has a crucial role in the maturity of the newborn baby. The labor contractions produce a rich cocktail of complex hormones of love - Oxytocin and hormones of stress, called Catecholamine. The surge of hormones clears the lung of the newborn, brings more blood to the heart and brain, and mobilizes precious nourishing substances which flood the cells. This enhances the transition of the baby from the water environment into the air breathing world. Moreover, this extraordinary hormone body experience changes the overall emotional patterns of the mother. It prepares you for motherhood by increasing your capacity for love and attachment. After completing the birth process women feel very powerful and capable. Their mothering instinct is alive and strong and their capacity to take care of the newborn is increased.

On the other hand, the experience of c-section (cesarean), even caused by medical reasons, is leaving the mother with a sense of loss. The joy of having a child cannot wipe away her grief of missing a substantial part of herself. Birth is shaping woman's personality. It is contributing to her maturity and sense of self-worth. Having cesarean, the woman is robbed of a very precious formative experience that is central in her life. This brings great grief and feeling of loss and separation from her child.

A friend of mine has shared with me the feeling of her baby not belonging to her. The deprivation of actually experiencing delivery and the sense of incompletion, as if the baby is still inside, and the one in the world is not the same.

The attachment of the mother to her baby is strongly influenced by the ability to feel that her baby is part of her, even after birth. This is the magic produced by the hormones during vaginal delivery. Your bonding with the newborn in the outer world gets part during the ecstatic moment of the passage of the baby through your cervix and the vagina. The third stage of labor is similar to the act of conception and brings about physiological and psychological changes in mother and baby.

Cesarean section (c-section) is a rescue for a minority and should be kept in these limits. The world Health organization suggests that cesareans are 1 in 10 births or 15% at most. However, they are more than 30 %. Why this happening is is simple. Because business goals are ruling over nature-led, evidence-based, experience-proven practices.

Moreover the marketing of a money-led c-section practice is gaining acceptance by sympathetic appeal. Its promoted humanistic value is touching the heart. All of this is allowed by us, consumers. Why? Because it takes time to educate yourself. You have been thought to consider doctors superhuman and to trust them. They were also thought to consider surgical birth humanistic.

Those who not search the truth themselves, turn out to be entrapped by the marketed "truths". On both sides - doctors and patients there are true victims. The way out is to be honest with ourselves, to be strong enough to face reality and follow through with our decisions.

The informed choice is what we have a right to! But the right is to do it yourself - to inform yourself, to take the responsibility and to be in tune with nature.

Our bodies know what is best; being in tune will make us understand if we need cesarean or vaginal birth.

If cesarean is a medical necessity, which happens in 5-10% of births, we need to accept it. We need to know the consequences of c-section and reconnect with ourselves and the baby. The compassion between women is important to resolving the unexpected and making sense of ourselves after surgery. The time of relaxation spent with the newborn and the breastfeeding are a wonderful way to fill the gap of the incomplete birthing process, reunite with the newborn and reconcile yourself to reality.

Let's not allow the marketing of money-led business goals in birth mislead us, educate ourselves and other birthing options and claim our rights to access to informed options. And if there is a true birthing problem, let’s celebrate the wonderful use of technology and expertise in cesarean rescue after labor.

Childbirth Resources

Spiritual Midwifery Book

The classic book on home birth is now available in a new edition, with updated information on the safety of natural childbirth, new birthing stories, and the most recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives. Included are stories of working with Amish women, shedding light on a different culture with a similar appreciation for natural childbirth. Ina May also provides new information about potentially dangerous techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, as well as the latest findings about VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). Improved instructions for handling breech births are also given. When the first edition of Spiritual Midwifery was published in 1976, it introduced an entire generation of young women to the possibility of home birth and breast feeding. It also breathed new life into the all-but-vanished field of midwifery.
