Cost of childbirth no insurance is very high, because even a low-risk woman pays for all the medical interventions made in a hospital. Every fourth hospitalizations in USA is due to pregnancy and childbirth. The same is in Eastern Europe, while in Netherlands and other parts of Western Europe, pregnant women and childbirths are monitored at home. Although 85% of women are considered healthy and low-risk for complications in the prenatal fetus development or during birth, nearly all births in the United States occur in hospitals with high-tech medical interventions. This results in unnecessary spending, accompanied by low satisfaction of the women.
Interestingly, the more technology is used, the worst are the outcome for the infant and the mother. Birthing center's and midwifes' statistics are consistently better than national average. Instead of expanding on existing models of high-quality low-cost care, in New York now it is almost impossible to find legally practicing midwife (2010). The requirement for a midwife to practice legally is to be supported by a hospital and a doctor who can handle the emergencies. On 1 May 2010 one of the most progressive hospital in New York St. Vincent's in Manhattan is closed due to bankrupt. The result is that the midwives found themselves without backing or support.
They are either going to change career or practice illegally hoping to "fly under the radar". This makes it very hard to have a trained and experience midwife come to your home and assist you during childbirth. The same situation occurs in Bulgaria, a country in Easter Europe where midwifes are not allowed to work outside of the hospital.
What kind of result can we expect? The women who instinctively feel that homebirth is the best choice for them will opt for unassisted homebirth. They will not be able to find a trained midwife to assist them. No wonder the search for information on unassisted birth online has increased dramatically in the past three years.
