Effects of Teen Pregnancy

Effects of teen pregnancy are related to the mother development -- physical, emotional and social, to the baby growth and to society as a whole.

Effects of Teen PregnancyTeens are still growing and when it comes to teens the question is whether to grow or breed. Is it better to use all the resources to mature or to share some for reproduction?
People in wealthier countries and in middle and upper strata of society hold the view that pregnancies in teenagers is risky. It is considered appropriate for women to have finished their education, to have a suitable partner and get married, to have skills for making a living and parenting before having their own children.

There are several correlations which argue for delay of pregnancy in teens:

    • The general principle is that taller parents produce healthier children. This relates to the fact that if the mother is taller, her own growth has finished, her pelvis has reached its mature size and she is in a better position to allocate energy and the resource to the growth of the fetus.
    • If the conditions are favorable and the mother can expect that she will be alive and in a better health in a few years, it is better to wait for a while before getting pregnant.  In poor areas effects of teen pregnancy in early teens is related to the fact that there is no contraception and conditions for women are bad, so with age her chances of survival and optimal health are not great. In wealthy countries this is not the case and mothers generally have better health and socioeconomic conditions.
    • Real issue in early teen pregnancies is the fact that the rate of obstetric complications because of incomplete growth of the pelvis is higher in early teens (10-15 years old) than in late teens, early twenties or older women. The birth canal grows slower than the skeleton. When a girl reaches her full stature, the pelvis lags several months behind and will not reach mature size and shape until several years after skeleton growth has finished.

If a girl gets pregnant before the pelvis has reached the adult size and shape, the babies tend to be smaller, but the bay head is still big which results in common cases of cephalopelvic disproportion. This might lead to greater chance of cesarean.
