Prenatal tests are based on the concept that children with deficiencies or handicapped babies should not be born. Nowadays, genetic deseases can be diagnosed even before birth, but you need to know what will you do if you know.
Going through prenatal test is an ordeal for the couple. When I made the prenatal tests for my third child, he was diagnosed with a high probability of Down. I could not believe it. I was so stressed, and anxious. Then I made the test again and it turned out there was a mistake made by the sinographer. The baby was completely normal. Can you imagine what a woman goes through with such false results.
Prenatal tests are already part of routine prenatal care. Those who are told they have a baby with serious handicaps and decide to abort them, suffer grief and guilt. Now there are even more screening the alpha feto-protein (AFP) test and chorionic villus sampling (CVS). As I told you about the mistake with the prenatal test of my third baby. The mistake was in the measurement of the chorionic villus sampling.
Knowing if the baby has disabilities might be an advantage. You have a choice, yet make sure the test is accurate. Deciding for or against testing makes many women feel they will be making a dreadful mistake regardless of what they choose. With my second preganancy I decided not to make any prenatal tests for abnormalities. During the whole preganancy I had a quiet desperation, fears and nightmare about abnormalities. So with the third child I made the tests early, I also went through two dreadful weeks because of the wrong results. But then, I was calm during the whole pregnancy knowing that the baby is fine.
What we are so much afraid of? Honestly, I cannot comment. Not having taken care of a child with abnormalities, I cannot say. It is a personal choice. I believe that whatever the choice, a parent should find support and allow herself to feel that she is right. We are taking responsibility any way choosing the life we want to have with our children.
There are support groups for parents with children with disabilities and for parens who have chosen to make an abortion.
I think that it is important to take the responsibility and be ok with it.
