Single Artery Umbilical Cord

Single artery umbilical cord occurs in 1 out of 100 singleton pregnancies and in 1 out of 20 in twins and multiples. Single artery umbilical cord occurs more often in fetal demise than in live births. Sometimes a fusion of the cord and near the edge of the placenta can be seen as a 2 vessel umbilical cord.

Single artery umbilical cord is found in white women twice as often than in African and Japanese women. Diabetes is considered a risk factor.

Of infants with single artery umbilical cord, 20% are reported to have other often chromosomal abnormalities, the one most highly associated with the condition is Trisomy 18.

If you have a single artery umbilical cord abnormality, make sure you make all ther necessary prenatal screening, chromosome anomalies testing, as well as fetal echocardiogram. Fetal karyotyping to ensure that the fetus is growing normally. In the third trimester make an ultrasonography for fetal growth, as well as neonatal ultrasonography to examine for renal anomalies. Anomalies can occur in any organ system if a two-vessel cord is discovered.

8mackers hey -- the scene where you point out the SVC pouring into the right ventricle.... shouldn't that be the right atrium? and THEN into the right ventricle below it?

yzhen002 (uploader) yes. thanks for catching it. there obviously was an error in labeling the right atrium as the ventricle. i've made a note of it in the description. thanks again !
