Two vessel umbilical cord can make you so anxious and afraid that something is going wrong with the baby. Ok, just relax. The appearance of a two-vessel umbilical cord does not mean that there will be a problem with the baby. The chances are high that your baby is healthy and will be born perfect.
Now what is a two-vessel umbilical cord and how it appeared. Usually the umbilical cord has three vessels One vein carries the oxygen and the nutrients to the baby directly from your blood. Two arteries shuttle the waste back to you to be disposed of by your kidneys. In the case of a two-vessel umbilical cord the artery is just one, yet it can still do its job fairly well.
Doctors and researchers do not know for sure how the two-vessel umbilical cord appeared. It is suggested that one of the arteries disappeared in early pregnancy. Sometimes a normal three-vessel umbilical cord might be thought as a two-vessel, because the arteries may fuse close to the placenta.
If there is a single umbilical cord indeed, it is best to make prenatal tests for fetal anomalies. Four out of five babies are fine even with a single umbilical artery. Detailed anatomy survey is good prenatal test. It would be helpful to do fetal echocardiogram to check for cardiovascular abnormalities. Also fetal karyotyping.
Sometimes 2-vessel umbilical cord is associated with growth retardation, so in the third trimester make an ultrasound for fetal growth. A neonatal ultrasound is good to check for renal anomalies.
Making all these tests can help you to know for sure what is the real state of the baby. Try to be calm and expect the best.
