Umbilical cord cyst is growth or an outpocket which develop anywhre along the cord connecting the fetus to the placenta. More common are the cysts which appear at the end of the cord close to the fetus.

Cysts are identified through an ultrasound as early as the first trimester.
Umbilical Cord Cyst

There are true cysts and false cysts.

True umbilical cord cysts contain cells that contain living tissue. They are remnantd from the early part of embryonic development. They can spontaneously heal themselves and disappear during the second trimester.

False Cysts

A false or pseudo cyst appears when the Wharton's jelly inside the umbilical cord swells like an outpocket. One in every 5 babies which have a false cyst also can have other abnormalities, including chromosomal ones or umbilical cord hernia.

If the cyst is a single one, it usually heals by itself and dissolves. It is monitored for any complications though. The solitary cyst can vary from 15 to 25 mm in length with a diameter from 3 to 6 mm in the 8-9 week of gestational age.

When the cyst is monitored, it is often considered if the gestational sac and yolk sac,a s well as the fetal heart rate are within normal ranges for the gestational age.

In most cases, during the second trimester is noticed resolution of the cyst and normal fetal anatomic survey.

Detection of cord cysts in the first trimester usually results in normal and healthy baby at delivery.

Multiple cysts often indicate a serious defect which can lead to miscarrage.

When there is a cyst it is recommended to make all prenatal screening for abnormalities, including amniocentesis. If no other problems are found, thing are ok.

Keep in mind that most cysts disappear on their in the second or third trimester.
