Umbilical cord hernia is the protrusion of a part of intestine through the weaker part of the skin in the abdominal wall. This takes place usually under the belly button.
In fetuses the umbilical cord provides nourishment from the mother. After birth the umbilical cord falls off and the opening is covered by muscle. If the opening is not covered properly by muscle or the muscle in the area is weak. It becomes umbilical hernia.
If
the umbilical hernia is small, it can be gradually closed by the age of
2. Large hernias do not close normally and require surgery.
If the umbilical hernia is not treated properly, the hernia cannot be pushed back into the abdominal cavity and can cause pain and nausea.
The hernia is compressed and the blood supply is stopped to that area. This can lead to constipation and that part of the intestine dies.
In case of infants, if the umbilical hernia is not severe, the doctor may push the intestine inside the abdominal cavity. But if it is severe, surgery is the only option.
During surgery, the doctor makes a small incision near the weak muscle area around the belly button, the tissues are pushed into the abdomen. The opening is stitched. If the defect is large and the muscles cannot be sutured, a mesh is placed inside to hold the tissues.
