Unassisted Childbirth Video

What an unassisted childbirth video! The baby was born in water in caul -- in the amniotic sac. This birth is in a birthing center, but without interventions and it is so beautiful.

Here are some of the comments about the unassisted video clips home childbirth:

"Amazing...I wonder what the statistics are on these kinds of births? "

"My full-term baby was born in the caul after a precipitous labor (land birth!), and the midwife was stunned. He came out much faster than this baby. I was shocked but thrilled.. "

"I never even thought about this being a possibility until I stumbled across this video! Very lovely to see, looks very calm and peaceful but that might be the music :P
Thank you for putting this up =] "

"This has got to be the coolest and most beautiful thing I have ever seen!"

"looks really amazing. Thanks for sharing this video. Really appreciate seeing calm births. "

"My 3rd baby was born in the caul , easiest birth lol! What an amazing experiance, i just wish i could have seen it too, unfortunalty i missed it all :("

"thanks for sharing! my 4th baby was born at home with her head in the sac :) they say it bring luck to the child!"

"That's awesome! My daughter was almost born in the caul but it was so freakin' hard to push her out with that bubble around her head! My midwife didn't "break" her water but put pressure on it while I pushed and eventually it popped. That was the most AMAZING feeling when that happened, I felt like her head shrunk down to half the size! This is amazing though. It's supposed to be a sign of intelligence."

"same happened with my baby, i had waterbirth, and her head was almost born in the sac...but it burst as her head was born...felt it go like you and it was the weirdest feeling!"

"Wow! It looked like she was giving birth to the moon! My son was born in the caul too :) I wish I had footage like this!"

"i feel as though we have borne witness to an extraordinarily holy event. many blessings & thanks to the family for sharing this moment with us."

"Lol, Steph! (;P) I was thinkin', "I've heard about the ping-pong ball trick, but sheesh!"
Very cool thing to see, though! I'd only read about sac births until I saw this!
Thanks for posting this amazing birth! (:D) "

"I just got done with an interview with my mother about my birth and I was born still in the sac, the water hadn't broken! Someone told her that there was a folk tale or something about children (or boys in particular) being born without the water breaking. Anyone know what such a folk tale might be?"

"This is known as being born 'in the caul' - the sac used to be bottled years ago and sailors would buy them for a v high price - its rare. Babies born in the caul were said to never drown and sailors would buy the preserved sac for good luck. Bc its a rare event, babies born in the caul were seen as special or of auspicious birth - Napolean Bonaparte was supposedly a 'caulbearer' or born in the caul. I think its really special that you were born in the caul - congrats to you and yr ma!"

"Apparently years & years & years ago the sac from a baby who was born in the caul was prized by sailors who dried it and kept it as protection from drowning - as a baby born in the caul is said to be protected from death by drowning. Something like that anyway."

"amazing, my son was born in the bag, i felt like i missed out coz i didnt see lol! thanks for sharing this! "

"that was beautiful! I saw a baby born in the caul, but the sac ruptured as the shoulders were born. "

Is there any benefits from this ?

"studies from around the world have shown that women who labor & birth in the water have:
a) less need for pain meds
b) shorter labors and faster births
c) less vaginal tearing

There is no increase in risk to the baby and some studies showed slightly lower rates of newborn complications, including infection."

how big is the sac in proportion to the baby? Does it fit right around him or is it bigger?

"The sac is filled with water, so it is bigger than the baby. Imagine a baby inside a balloon. "

"thank you for posting! absolutely beautiful. my last waterbirth my sons sac broke just as his head was crowning..en caul is such a special type of birth"

"this was so interesting for me to watch as 18 months ago I too gave birth to my son underwater and in the Caul. We had him at home and it was pretty similiar to this, except he came out much quicker and the caul broke as his body entered the pool. Isn't it fantastic? We are pregnanct again and I can't wait to homebirth a second time!"
