Unassisted Childbirth

The Freedom of Unassisted Childbirth
After unassisted childbirth of Yana
In unassisted childbirth I sense the magic of creation.

Unassisted childbirth is a calling! Reading the stories of mothers giving unassisted birth, I see the red thread of spirituality running through their souls and connecting them in a sorority of the Female Creative Energy of the Universe, Nature.

Everyone who has experienced an unassisted childbirth knows that this is a deeply spiritual experience. The whole pregnancy is an intense course in life beyond birth and death. It is a blessing of uplifting, guidance, growth.

A month before the conception of my first child - Gabbie - my beloved and I were walking in the hills of the Balkan Mountain, enjoying the refreshing evening after a scourging day. We were talking all day how we will raise our child, about home schooling and options for a career. And on this day, the 13 July, I said, “Do you see how conception is a purely material phenomenon, the spontaneous mingling of sperm and ovum? We are just a product of evolution. If not, now is the time to feel it!"

This comment was like throwing down the gauntlet.

The sun was setting down behind us creeping on the hill on the other side. We paused. I stared at another hill, and all of a sudden I felt sliding into a magic. This hill, which has never impressed me, strangely turned into a nature source of power and inspiration. As if I was getting connected with an energy source of support. The wind blowing at my back got stronger. A rush of air penetrated through my back into my heart and filled me with an immensely powerful and strong, yet gentle, love. I was startled, but not afraid, because the power even though so intense, was kind. My reasoning stopped. I was pure sensation, not able to conceptualize an unfamiliar phenomenon. I was thrilled, ecstatic, overwhelmed and in owe.

The first drops of rain came down to the earth. We were heading home. There was a dramatic obvious change. My husband saw it without comment. He was supportive and open, unobtrusive and friendly.

Tears streamed down my face mingling with the rain drops. Going home, sobbing with joy and owe, I could analyze what happened.

"Dancho, this is our child. So strong, so loving. A true realized spirit, much higher than what I could fathom. Now I know and will never forget (I hope) that we are souls, living beyond birth and death!"

The rain was strong and abundant. The earth was thirsty, because for months not a drop has come to her lips. This was a blessing for the village, for the plants and animals. It was a silent celebration in the hot summer.

I have not conceived yet. The conception would be on 2 August. But I have already felt the soul of our child. I already have been changed forever. And all my doubt was washed away with a miracle.

The conception surely came in the same village of Cerovo (Healing place) in two weeks, and a transforming pregnancy of new awareness and spiritual revival followed. It finished with an unassisted birth! This was a birth which I was carefully guided and prepared for. A birth which was an initiation and awakening to the power of manifestation.

Unassisted childbirth did not seem an option at first. I have not heard about it and it was sort of forbidden in my country. However, I was carefully guided to a birth, which I can call nothing else, but "unassisted childbirth".

Unassisted childbirth means birthing at home without help. In fact it is not exactly so. Most women are assisted by their partner. More often being at home, nature becomes the greatest doula providing support, reassurance and love. Our bodies know how to go about an unassisted childbirth. They are meant for it. If we let them do it, we will be surprised of the ease and wonder of an unassisted childbirth.

Childbirth Resources

Spiritual Midwifery Book

The classic book on home birth is now available in a new edition, with updated information on the safety of natural childbirth, new birthing stories, and the most recent statistics on births managed by The Farm Midwives. Included are stories of working with Amish women, shedding light on a different culture with a similar appreciation for natural childbirth. Ina May also provides new information about potentially dangerous techniques routinely used in hospitals during and after birth, as well as the latest findings about VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). Improved instructions for handling breech births are also given. When the first edition of Spiritual Midwifery was published in 1976, it introduced an entire generation of young women to the possibility of home birth and breast feeding. It also breathed new life into the all-but-vanished field of midwifery.
