Any birth involves some pain, but in natural birth the mother trusting her body knows how to relax and the body supplies her with the hormones of love which alleviate pain. In my own experience the third phase was painless. My body knew how to do it. The position I took was the best for the birth and made it easy for the baby to slip through the birth canal.
Giving birth is the most amazing, incredible thing a woman can do. The mother and her primitive instincts are going to push the baby out. A mother's body knows exactly what it needs to do (even if the mother's mind doesn't).
